Olympic Downhill Skiing

Skiing is a group of sports with skis as primary equipment. Skiing is featured on the Winter Olympic Games and includes five disciplines: Alpine Skiing, Cross Country Skiing, Ski Jumping, Nordic Combined, Freestyle and also snowboarding.

Alpine Skiing

Alpine Skiing in the Winter Olympic Games consists of a total of ten events which there are five for men and five for women with same rules for both men and women. Alpine Skiing events include Downhill, Super G, Giant Slalom, Slalom and Combined.

Cross Country Skiing

Cross Country Skiing in the Winter Olympic Games consists of a total of twelve different cross country skiing events. Women competes in the sprint, team sprint, 15km individual start, 30km mass start, and the 4×5km relay while men competes in the sprint, team sprint, 15km individual start, 30km pursuit, 50km mass start, and the 4×10km relay. It is evident that both men and women go through same events but distance on men’s events is higher than of women’s events.

Freestyle Skiing

It is said that Freestyle skiing is a product of America in the 1960s. It was first included as a demonstration event in the Calgary Winter Olympics in 1988 and Mogul Skiing was later added to the programme in 1992 while Aerial Skiing was added in 1994.

Nordic Combined

Nordic Combined events consist of a ski jumping competition and a cross country skiing race. It requires physical strength, technical control, and endurance. There are a total of 3 events: Individual Gundersen, Sprint, and Team. For the Individual Gundersen, ski jumping takes place in 90-meter hill while Team and Sprint events takes place on a larger hill of 120 meters.

Ski Jumping

Ski jumping on the Winter Olympic Games consist of three events: Individual Normal Hill, Individual Larger Hill, and a Team Event. For all events, there are two jumps and those with the highest total score are declared the winner.
