2010 Vancouver Olympics
The Winter Olympics is a multi-sport event held every four years and features winter sports. The next Winter Olympic Games on 2010 will be hosted by Vancouver, Canada thus allowing Canada to host its second Winter Olympics. Vancouver is a low-altitude seaport city with a relatively mild oceanic climate with a population of more than 2.5 million. Because of this, Vancouver will be the largest metropolitan area to ever host a Winter Olympic Games.
For the 2010 Winter Olympics, there will be 7 sports with 15 disciplines. Most of these games are known as Canada’s games. These are Skiing (Alpine Skiing, Cross-Country Skiing, Ski Jumping, Nordic Combined, Freestyle Skiing, and Snowboard), Skating (Speed Skating, Figure Skating, and Short Track Speed Skating), Bobsleigh (Bobsleigh and Skeleton), Luge, Biathlon, Ice Hockey and Curling.
Most events are held in Vancouver while some events will also be held in Whistler. Such competition venues in Vancouver include: Canada Hockey Place, Vancouver Olympic Centre, Pacific Coliseum and the UBC Thunderbird Arena also known as the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre. Competition venues in Whistler include: The Whistler Sliding Centre, Whistler Creekside, and the Whistler Olympic Centre.
There are also non-competition venues like athlete housing, parking lots, and storage facilities. These sites are very important for the smooth functioning of the Games. Here are the non-competition venues that can be found in Vancouver and Whistler: BC Place, Main Media Centre, Olympic and Paralympic Village Vancouver, Olympic and Paralympic Village Whistler, Whistler Media Centre, Whistler Medals Plaza.
